Jerónimo Giménez (born Seville, 10 Oct 1854; died Madrid, 19 Feb 1923). Spanish composer and conductor. Giménez attended the Paris Conservatorium after receiving a scholarship from the Diputación of Cádiz, and it was there that he studied with Alard, Savart and Thomas. In 1885, he became the director of the Teatro Apolo in Madrid, and later the director of both the Unión Artístico-Musical and the Madrid Concert Society. Whilst he composed music for orchestra and solo instruments, he took a special interest in the zarzuela, and as such his music is noticeably influenced by Spanish folksongs and dances. His more famous compositions include De vuelta del vivero (1895), La boda de Luis Alonso (1897), and La tempranica (1900). La boda de Luis Alonso was written by Jerónimo Giménez as a sequel to his previous zarzuela, El baile de Luis Alonso, both about the celebrated Spanish dancer Luis Alonso. ------------------------------------ *Zarzuela - The Spanish Lyric Theatre |
